POSITION:             IT Director

LOCATION:              On site, Augusta, Maine

SHIFT:                       Day, Mon-Fri 8am to 5pm


The IT Director oversees the development, implementation and use of information technology throughout the company. This person strategically plans, manages and oversees projects and daily activities to efficiently deploy assets to ensure the efficient daily operation of the IT infrastructure at J.S. McCarthy Printers.

The IT Director will manage the IT department staff and outsourced professionals to maintain a stable, reliable and up to date network.


  • Defines and implements the strategic direction of the information technology function in conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer and President.
  • Actively participate with the Senior Management Team to understand and participate in the organization’s strategic plan. Direct the IT function to support this plan, including availability of staff, hardware and software to support the plan
  • Stay on the forefront of emerging trends, best practices and threats to develop a sound risk management strategy and ensure best practices are followed.
  • Evaluates the organization’s technology use and needs and works with staff to develop strategies and plans to maximize the use of technology to support the business.
  • Vet new vendors and make recommendations to the Senior Management Team for solutions to challenges the company is facing, including a ticketing system.
  • Oversee implementation of new IT solutions with solid project management expertise.
  • Oversees information technology and telecommunications operations including the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, installation, upgrade, conversion, and support of all IT systems.
  • Develops and maintains IT security policies and procedures, providing for data security and access controls, disaster planning and recovery, and compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations.
  • Oversees annual testing of the disaster recovery plan.
  • Complete client or business partner IT security audit or assessment evaluations, meetings, etc.
  • Responsible for risk assessment of IT systems and recommendations for implementation of mitigating those risks.
  • Engage third party vendors and ensure they are following best practices in system management, desktop support, etc..
  • Define and implement data access security levels throughout the organization.
  • Serves as IT resource to management and employees including solving computer issues and making recommendations to enhance information systems and promote more efficient, cost-effective delivery of IT services.
  • Maintains department staff level and expertise at a cost efficient yet effective level. Assists HR in recruitment of IT staff. Oversees onboarding and training of IT staff, provide annual reviews and coaching if needed. Ensures that the department organizational structure is supportive of organizational goals and objectives.
  • Oversee employee IT and data security training program.
  • Create and oversee IT Asset Inventory for hardware & software.
  • Create user access protocols and ensure they are carried out.
  • Maintain a secure, stable operating system and maintain functionality of company hardware, including laptop and desktop computers and related hardware and software.
  • Manage outside vendor relationships and collaborate with such vendors as needed for efficient deployment of IT resources.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of the Network and system configurations, sufficient to tech support all PC locations and Office Servers.
  • Deploy new hardware and software for both in person and remote users. Create and implement systems for onboarding new employees and ending access for terminated employees.
  • Maintain network security through security updates, hardware and software configurations, printing configuration, etc.
  • Ensure hardware and software logs, event logs, audits and all IT documentation up to date.
  • Oversee appropriate security permissions, monitor event logs and respond when appropriate. Ensure network architecture is well integrated.
  • Ensure a continual, reliable backup and recovery plan is in place at all times for system data.
  • Replace, maintain and configure hardware on PC Systems, Servers and Printers. This includes hard drives, internal and external drives, ram and monitors as needed.
  • Establish baseline trends of network performance and becoming familiar with how the network operates without problems.
  • Monitor system performance, company needs, industry trends and best practices for performance and cybersecurity, and make recommendations for improving the IT infrastructure.
  • Ability to learn and retain knowledge on various integrated systems through on-the-job training.
  • Project management skills, including the ability to manage or participate in network upgrades or time-sensitive troubleshooting in person or via phone.
  • Additional responsibilities as required.



  • Strong managerial, project management, customer service and leadership skills.
  • Experience identifying and implement solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to prepare and analyze reports, analyze trends, and develop IT policies and procedures.
  • A well-grounded and up to date understanding of IT network infrastructure, computer hardware, operating systems, application fundamentals and knowledge of networking hardware and software is required.
  • Working and in-depth knowledge (able to use and support) of the following software products:
    • Microsoft Windows: Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2012, and Server 2016
    • Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Publisher.
    • Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware Products
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader and Writer
    • Other Microsoft products
  • In-depth knowledge of managing virtual servers
  • Experience working on computer systems, security, network and systems and administration, data storage systems and phone systems.
  • Up to date knowledge of telecommunication technology and best practices.
  • Excellent project management and prioritization skills and a proven ability to multi-task.
  • The ability to work effectively with end users and direct reports.



Bachelor’s degree in a computer related field or at least 5 years of management experience in Information Technology.
